Jade Plant - just one tip to grow this beautiful plant for a beautiful home

Hey there!!! In this post I would tell you everything that a house plant lover should know about the beautiful Jade plant. This blog would mainly focus on how to care as well as propagation of Jade.

But firstly I want to say you why I am posting this blog today. So, most of you already know that I am a crazy lover of plants. Wherever I go, whatever the occasion be, I always like to collect a new plant baby for my little balcony. By occasion I am not meaning any special festival ha; it may be any small or big moment of my life. So, on one such day, I bought a baby Jade, when I visited Botanical Garden Flower Festival in Bangalore. It was in a very small pot, when I brought it home and I re-potted it in a medium sized pot. It's been almost 2 and a half years now and it was growing happily in my balcony until the day when I over-watered it one day and it was sitting in that excess water till the next morning. After that day, my Jade began to fall its leaves and this is the condition today.

Can you notice the tiny Jade leaf on the floor

As of now I have kept it on my Living Room window - or Plant Recovery Zone (as I name this window) for it to recover. And it's been 8 days now and I can see little life back in my pretty plant. I shall definitely try to post an update on my Jade after it recovers fully. Fingers crossed!!!

My Jade in the Recovery period

This is the reason I am writing this blog today as a welcome gift to all of you to my blog. I want to help you all with the information or experiences I have gathered so far in taking care of my plants. Hope you find it helpful.

Slowly recovering

Let's begin...

Jade, also called Crassula ovata, lucky plant, money plant(sometimes), friendship tree, elephant bush or money tree, is a succulent plant that is native to South Africa. It's one of the favourite house plants all over the world. Since it is easy to care, it's also considered a very good option to gift your loved ones. This plant is very famous for Bonsai, and Feng Shui treats it as a good luck charm plant. This beautiful succulent plant has vibrant green leaves.

Such beautiful leaves...

  • Propagation, soil and care:
It's very easy to grow from stem cuttings like this...

My Stem cutting

You can grow them in any soil, pot and in any season. But preferably Jade potting soil is a mixture of garden soil and coco-peat - both in equal proportion. You can also add some compost if you want. One important point here is that you should use well drained soil since Jade is a succulent plant and it doesn't like to sit in water for long time.

Now coming to the stem, there is no any hard and fast rule of how to choose the cuttings but it's important to note here that 1-2 inch of the cutting should go under the soil when you plant the cutting.

Sunlight...

Jade prefers indirect sunlight but you can grow it in direct sunlight as well.

  • Every problem has a solution:

Now let's talk about the common problems people face while growing Jade...
Most frequent problem is yellowing of leaves or falling of leaves (that I am also facing right now): For this I would suggest just one simple resolution and that is keep your Jade in direct sunlight or partial shade but water it just twice a week. Friends, in most of the cases, this plant die out of excess water. It belongs to succulent family and watering twice a week is more than enough for this hardy plant.

And if nothing of the above tips work for you, and if you see that your Jade is still dying, then do one thing. Take any healthy stem of your Jade and plant it in another pot with the above mentioned potting mix and care it the way I have mentioned above. In this way you would get a new Jade plant.

One more tip!!!
If your pot doesn't have good drainage, then layer the bottom portion of your pot with stones and put your potting mix soil above that to plant Jade.

I tried my best to help you to care this beautiful plant. Hope you all find it useful

Meet you in my next blog with more interesting topics on plants, home decor or food recipes or about a new place. So, until then, take care.. XOXO
